How to find a running partner at your pace

July 20, 2026· 5 min read · by the TBuddy team

Two runners jogging together along a city promenade at sunrise.

A running partner is the cheapest performance boost in the sport. They pull you out of bed at 5:45, they hold conversation pace on easy days, and they turn Sundays from optional to sacred. Here's how to find one you'll still be running with in twelve months.

Filter one — pace

Post your honest easy pace in your first message. "6:00/km easy, 5:20/km tempo" is a better opener than "looking for a running buddy." Runners self-select in one message and you skip the mismatch problem entirely.

Filter two — distance

A 10K training partner and a marathoner build very different weeks. Say what you're training for — Sunday long, weekday tempo, or just staying honest. Vague goals produce vague partnerships.

Filter three — day and route

  • Pick two fixed days — Tue easy, Sat long is the classic.
  • Pick a route both of you can start from within 5 minutes.
  • Meet at a well-lit public start — a park entrance, a metro exit.

First run

Keep it short — 5 to 8 km at conversation pace. If you can talk in full sentences the whole way, the pace is right. If one of you is gasping, adjust down for session two.

The best running partner isn't the fastest — it's the one who shows up on the day you didn't want to.

Keep it going

  • Mark both days as recurring tasks in TBuddy — the reminder alone doubles turnout.
  • Rotate who picks the route.
  • One monthly "race day" together — a 10K, a park run, a hill session.

Filter TBuddy for Running Buddy tag, your neighbourhood and your pace bracket. Message three people this week. Start Tuesday.
