How to find a workout partner online — safely

Meeting a workout partner online is now the norm — but the internet doesn't come with a background check. Here's the exact five-minute pass we recommend before you meet anyone from any app.

The 60-second profile check

  • Is the profile ID-verified? On TBuddy that means email + ID + selfie all passed.
  • Do they have at least 3 reviews with real names and dates?
  • Is the trust score above 60?
  • Do they list the same city, the same gym area, the same time slots?
  • Are their photos consistent — same person, same age range?

The 3-minute chat check

Ask three specific questions in one message: which gym, what days and what time. A real partner answers all three inside a day. Anyone deflecting or moving the chat to WhatsApp is the loudest red flag there is.

The 1-minute plan check

  • First session is 45 minutes max, at the gym entrance, in a well-lit place.
  • Tell a friend at home who, where and until when.
  • Turn on TBuddy live location share for the session.
  • Bring your own water, your own bag, your own way home.
If a first session needs three excuses to reschedule, cancel and move on. There are better partners in your city.

What to never do

  • Never meet at their home or car for the first session.
  • Never move money for a "shared subscription" outside the app.
  • Never share your locker code, gate code, apartment number.
  • Never accept unopened supplements or drinks from a partner you don't know well.
