Safe meet-ups for local buyers and sellers — a 2026 safety guide

Most local marketplace transactions are boringly uneventful. The ones that go wrong almost always break one of five basic rules. Learn them once and treat them like traffic laws — the odds are wildly in your favour when you follow them, and you don't need to overthink the rest.
Rule 1: Meet where CCTV is watching
- Metro stations and mall food courts are ideal — high foot traffic, cameras, security on site.
- Bank branches and their ATM lobbies are surprisingly good — cameras + guards.
- Never someone's home, apartment lobby, or car park. Ever. For anything.
Rule 2: Bring a plus-one for anything above ₹10,000
This is the single biggest deterrent to bad-faith behaviour. Two people showing up = the buyer or seller acts exactly as they promised in chat. It costs nothing and works every time.
Rule 3: Never let money move before goods are inspected — and vice versa
- Seller: watch the UPI "success" screen AND the SMS in your bank app before handing over. Screenshots can be faked.
- Buyer: inspect and test the item on the spot before you pay. "I trust you, transfer later" is how strangers steal.
- Never accept overpayment + refund requests. This is a specific scam pattern.
- Never ship electronics to a stranger before payment clears. Chargebacks don't apply to UPI, but disputes still eat weeks.
Rule 4: Keep all coordination in the TBuddy app
The moment the conversation moves to WhatsApp or SMS, the platform can no longer help you if something goes wrong. Verified profiles, reports, and reviews only work in-app. If someone pushes hard to move off-platform before meeting, that's the red flag itself.
Rule 5: Trust the trust score
- Verified badge + 4.8+ rating + 20+ completed sales is a strong signal. Anything less, extra caution.
- Read the last five reviews, not the average. One recent bad review often reveals a pattern.
- New profile with a perfect deal at 40% below market price is not luck — it's bait.
