Trekking buddies for Himalayan treks — the safety checklist

The Himalayas don't reward improvisation. Whether you're doing Kedarkantha in winter or Kashmir Great Lakes in July, the difference between a great trek and a bad one is usually the person walking next to you. Here's what to check before you commit.

1. Fitness match

  • Ask their current weekly cardio — realistic minutes, not aspirational ones.
  • Ask about the last multi-day trek and elevation gained.
  • Match altitude experience: your first 4,000m should not be with someone who's never done 3,000m either.

2. Gear match

Send a photo of your pack, ask for theirs. Non-negotiables: proper shell, insulated jacket for 4,000m+, real trekking shoes broken in, headlamp, personal first-aid kit. If they list "jeans" as pants, walk away.

3. Trek-style match

  • Guided operator or independent? Both are fine; mismatched groups are not.
  • Pace: are you both stopping for photos, or is one of you speed-hiking?
  • Camp style: some love the group tent culture, others need silence at 8pm.

4. Communication rules

  • One chat window in TBuddy for everything trek-related.
  • Turn on live share while trekking so a friend at home can see the route in real time.
  • Agree in advance: if either wants to descend, both descend. Non-negotiable.

5. Financial rules

Split the guide/porter bill inside the TBuddy escrow — that way nobody's holding cash and nobody's chasing anyone at the end of the trek.

In the mountains, the right partner adds a whole safety margin. The wrong partner subtracts one. Choose carefully.

Filter TBuddy for Trek Buddy tag + your city + verified profiles. Message three, plan one, walk together.
